Summary

SJCC and EVC informed students and employees about a recent Canvas cybersecurity incident and advised everyone to remain cautious while the investigation continues.

Body

Dear Student,

We want to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the company that provides the Canvas learning management system used by many colleges and universities across California and the nation, including SJCC and EVC.

At this time, we have been informed that vendor-supported systems were accessed by unauthorized individuals. The following data appears to be exposed:

Names
Email addresses
Student ID numbers, not Social Security Numbers
Messages within the platform
There is no evidence at this time that passwords, Social Security Numbers, financial data, or dates of birth were involved.

While the investigation is ongoing, we encourage all employees and students to remain cautious and vigilant regarding possible phishing attempts or suspicious communications. Cybercriminals may try to take advantage of this situation by sending fake emails or links pretending to be from the college, Canvas, or other trusted organizations.

Please keep the following safety tips in mind:

Do not click on suspicious links or attachments.
Be cautious of emails asking for personal information or login credentials.
Verify the sender's email address carefully.
Never share your password with anyone.
Report suspicious emails to the college IT Security Team at itsecurity@sjeccd.edu.
We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates if additional information becomes available.
